I’m pleased to announce that the IUAA will be spotlighting alumni who have named and special scholarships that are awarded during the annual DASA weekend. Through these alumni profiles, we hope to highlight the exemplary service of these distinguished alumni, and in turn, we wish to inspire greater generosity. One such exemplar is Norman Hertzer of Cleveland, Ohio.

Dr. Hertzer, BA’64, MD’67, earned his bachelor’s degree at Indiana University Bloomington and his medical degree from the IU School of Medicine before training in general surgery and vascular surgery at the Cleveland Clinic. Following two years of military service as a surgeon in the United States Army, he was appointed to the Cleveland Clinic faculty in 1976 and later became Chairman of the Department of Vascular Surgery. He and his wife, Maryanne, BA’64 met as undergraduates at Indiana University and have been married for more than 50 years.

Dr. Hertzer received the Distinguished Alumni Service Award in 2000. When initially discussing their interest in student scholarships and endowing one themselves, the Hertzers hoped to encourage and inspire other DASA Club members to consider their own legacies and give generously to causes at Indiana University about which they have passion and deep interest. Through this gift and the legacy funding it provides, the Hertzers demonstrate the importance of supporting our future leaders and their academic pursuits. The Dr. Norman Hertzer Scholarship is presented each year during the DASA Club Scholarship Luncheon to a pre-medical senior student at the IU Bloomington campus.

First awarded in 2021, the Hertzer Scholarship has provided needed funds to two outstanding students thus far, and because it is endowed, can assist bright students in perpetuity with their dreams of finishing their degrees.
