Know Before You Go to Alumni Leaders Weekend 2023

We’re excited to welcome everyone back to Bloomington for Alumni Leaders Weekend. We cannot wait to celebrate you and have a lot of fun!

First time attendees

We recently hosted a 30-minute “Know Before You Go” webcast (here’s the link) that offers more in-depth information about the weekend, who will be there, and what to expect. This post is intended to give you the basic information you need to help you prepare for the weekend.

Location

All sessions will be held at the Monroe Convention Center, 302 S. College Ave. The Alumni Awards Banquet will be at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, 1001 E. 17th Street. The Annual Alumni Meeting and BBQ luncheon on Saturday will be at the DeVault Alumni Center (DAC), 1000 E. 17th Street.

Hotel

Attendees who pre-registered for a hotel room will stay in our group block at the Graduate Hotel, 210 E. Kirkwood Ave.

  • Check in is at 4 p.m. E.T.; check out is at 11 a.m.
  • The hotel can store luggage for anyone who would like to drop off their things prior to heading to the Monroe Convention Center on Friday morning.
  • There is a break at 4:30 p.m. on Friday for folks to get to the Graduate Hotel to check in to their room and get ready for the banquet.

Parking

  • For those staying at the Graduate Hotel, parking at the hotel is complimentary.
  • Parking at the Monroe Convention Center is free.
  • There will be a shuttle bus going to and from Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall for the awards banquet on Friday. There will be two shuttle runs from the Graduate to Assembly Hall at 5:45 and 6:15 p.m. There will be one shuttle from Assembly Hall at 9:30 p.m. to return guests to the Graduate.

Registration check-in

  • On-site registration is on Friday, June 23 at the Monroe Convention Center, 302 S. College Ave., starting at 10 a.m. E.T.
  • The check in table is located on the second floor, outside the Duke Energy Rooms.

What to wear

Overall, this weekend is meant to be fun and relaxing, so we encourage you to wear clothes that are comfortable and show your IU pride! We love seeing spirit wear from all our campuses. It’s always a good idea to dress in layers as meeting rooms can be chilly. Business or cocktail attire is appropriate for the Alumni Awards banquet on Friday night (suit; blazer with a shirt and tie; dresses, pantsuits).

COVID mask optional policy

Masks are now optional in the IU community. If you feel most comfortable wearing a mask in public spaces, please do so.

Meals

Friday

  • The weekend kicks off with an opening buffet lunch.
  • Snacks will be available during most break times.
  • The evening reception will include a hosted beer and wine bar and dinner will be buffet style.

Saturday

  • A heavy continental breakfast will be available Saturday morning in the Hoagy Carmichael Room at the Graduate Hotel.
  • The weekend closes with the annual Alumni Meeting and BBQ luncheon at the DeVault Alumni Center.

Special Meals

  • All meals are buffet style and include vegetarian and gluten-free options. If you requested a vegan meal, arrangements have been made for that as well.

Coffee & Conversations (formerly Individual Volunteers Orientation session):
Join us for hot coffee and smiling faces at Coffee and Conversations! Break the ice early with fellow Alumni Leaders Weekend attendees. Chapter leaders, individual volunteers, Advancement Partners, regional directors — if you’re registered, you’re invited!

Meet us in Ralph Rogers Room at the Monroe Convention Center from 10:30am-11:15am for this informal opportunity to connect with folks before the official ALW kick-off.

Optional community service project

Saturday – DeVault Alumni Center; 10:30 a.m.

Join fellow alumni leaders and IUAA team members for a special volunteer service project in partnership with United Way of Monroe County. Volunteers will be putting together literacy backpacks to encourage reading and leadership amongst youth in the Bloomington area. Volunteers will write a message to inspire, grow, and sustain the love of reading for local youths. These messages will be added to backpacks with other items, such as literacy workbooks, writing journals, notebooks, crayons, pencils, and a bookmark.
