Sometimes things are just a perfect fit. That’s probably the best way I can describe the IUPUI Regatta. It’s a canoe race on the downtown Indianapolis canal and has become the embodiment of IUPUI. It combines live music, food vendors, an art contest, student organizations, a dog costume contest and much more at an incredibly scenic location. Thousands of IUPUI faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends come together to share our spirit, pride, and tradition! Oh, and then there’s the competition. Just imagine 448 individuals competing on 112 teams vying to be the fastest through the ½ mile course! This is such a unique event because alumni, faculty, staff, and student teams all compete together. Champions are crowned in all male, all female, and co-ed divisions. It has truly become a signature event at IUPUI.
And did I mention that the event raises money for student scholarships? Since its inception approximately $8,000 has been raised for IUPUI students. The Regatta is also unique in that it relies on students and alumni to plan and implement the entire event and all of the events leading up to it.
The 5th annual Regatta is this week! There have been events throughout this week leading up to the festivities on Saturday. And this weekend marks a first for me. This will be my first time actually being in the race, as I compete with the IUPUI Alumni Council team (the picture above is me at practice last weekend). Wish me luck!
