The Indiana University community mourns the loss of Olivia Clarke, a proud alumna of IU Bloomington whose dedication to IU and its alumni community left a lasting impact. Her passion for bringing people together shaped both her time at IU and the lives of those fortunate enough to know her.
Olivia’s IU journey began in 1996 where she studied journalism at the Bloomington campus. As a student, she immersed herself in the Indiana Daily Student, serving as both an editor and editor-in-chief. After graduation, Olivia remained deeply connected to IU, serving on the board of the Chicago Chapter of the IU Alumni Association from 2007–2015. Serving as Chapter President from 2013–2015, she played a vital role in strengthening the network of local alumni, ensuring that fellow IU alums in had meaningful opportunities to stay engaged and support one another. Fellow board member Andrew LaMar recalls her leadership and dedication:
“She was never afraid to ask tough questions, always focused on ensuring that everything the Chapter did furthered IUAA’s mission and provided value to Chicago-area IU alumni.”
Even in the face of life’s greatest challenges, Olivia’s resilience and humor never wavered. She founded Humor Beats Cancer, a nonprofit dedicated to providing a space where young adults facing cancer could share both humorous and poignant stories. Through this platform, she fostered connection, understanding, and joy for those navigating a difficult journey.
Olivia left behind a powerful legacy that continues to inspire. Alicia Webb, a friend and former board member, shares how Olivia impacted others during her time with the IUAA.
“Olivia was incredibly passionate about everything she did. She loved IU and everyone else who loved IU. She created such an amazing family of IU alumni in the Chicago area and was someone who really embodied what it meant to be a part of the IU community. She was pleasant, very funny, and fun to be around. She brought so much joy to a lot of people. She led with her passion to IU.”
The IU community is forever grateful for Olivia’s contributions, and we extend our deepest sympathies to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her service to IU and incredible life.
