As the chapter leader for both Los Angeles and San Francisco, and the staff liaison for the entire state of Colorado, Alex Lopez plays an important role in fostering the energy and motivation among the communities that she oversees. Since joining the IUAA Communities team as Associate Director of Market Engagement in August 2022, Alex has witnessed many changes take place at IUAA. She has adapted to new roles, managed communities, and embraced the opportunities for positive change. Alex takes pride in being a part of change and always tries to find ways to enhance the volunteer experience.
A lover of social media, Alex engages with her chapters by checking their pages, offering feedback, and helping with creative ideas. Her commitment to honesty and authenticity is shown in her professional life and extends to her personal life too. Alex believes that being your true self is a key factor in building trust and strong connections with others. “I want folks to know how I’m showing up in life,” Alex said, “Being honest and authentic to your true self in the workplace–and in real life–will get you pretty far,” Alex said.
Beyond her role at IUAA, Alex has a passion for exploring her hometown of Indianapolis and seeing what local people have to offer. She follows many people on Instagram to make sure she doesn’t miss any pop-up opportunities or new places to visit. From art galleries to boutiques to little cafes, Alex is the one to speak to if you’re in need of an Indy daytrip. “I love a good cafe. If I could be anything, I would be a good cafe,” Alex said. “They’re such warm and welcoming environments. They’re good for any occasion–if you need to do work, a business meeting, or just go for fun. You can go for as little or as long as you’d like.”
During her undergraduate as a journalism student in the IU Media School, Alex participated in a month-long summer trip to Africa that was offered to the students. Alex was able to research and report on HIV/AIDS in Uganda. The trip had a huge impact on Alex. “It was the first time where I was on a project or school assignment that felt bigger than what was typically given in a classroom,” Alex said. “I was out in a town on the side of train tracks just interviewing sources all by myself.” She put together her own story that was published in their local newspaper. Once she graduated from college, she was inspired to dedicate two years to volunteer work through the Peace Corps. She knew she wanted to participate in helping the community, even though she was made aware that living conditions weren’t always perfect for volunteers. “The sense of community in Uganda is beautiful. It was such a big experience on so many levels,” she said. “Now I have a network of friends across the country, some are now around the world teaching or volunteering. I work with the IU recruiter now to help and inform those interested in the program to learn more.”
With her fun spirit, commitment to positive change, and love for community engagement, Alex Lopez is not just a chapter leader but a wonderful individual to be connected with in the IUAA community.
