Michael Cervantes, the newly appointed Director of Marketing Engagement at IUAA, is deeply committed to growth, connection, and authenticity. At the heart of his role lies his dedication to nurturing alumni engagement across diverse communities. From Atlanta to Chicago, Greater Cincinnati to New York and Washington DC, Michael empowers alumni to connect, network, and give back. His dedication to fostering meaningful relationships and creating impactful opportunities is shown through his work.
But Michael’s values extend beyond his professional efforts. As we continuously grow, Michael believes in the motto “do better.” For him, this means embracing growth, empathy, and mindfulness in every aspect of life. “For some people, it might mean being more mindful of other people’s feelings and developing empathy for other people,” he said. “It might mean not being so critical in themselves and really finding some of that self-confidence to maintain themselves to continue to grow.” Michael approaches each day with a commitment to personal and collective betterment, whether it’s empowering others to lead, advocating for change, or simply enjoying the present moment.
Growing up in the heat of San Antonio and its vibrant city, Michael’s hometown is infused with Latin and Hispanic culture. From the architecture to the colorful murals, the city left a mark on his upbringing. Michael was the first kid at his school to gather the courage to open up about his sexual orientation. It wasn’t easy; facing resistance from school authority and having to navigate a new social outlook. Yet, he was frontline in efforts for inclusivity and advocating for a Gay Straight Alliance at his high school. “I don’t think I really recognized the kind of courage it would’ve taken to do some of these things,” he said. “But when I look back, it’s not easy for an 11-year-old to start having those discussions and to be more authentic to themselves, especially in spaces that don’t always welcome other realms of diversity.” Michael’s high school was one of the first in the city to have a Gay Straight Alliance. Fast forward to today, Michael recently returned to San Antonio to marry his husband surrounded by friends and family.
In his free time, Michael finds relief in yoga practice and culinary adventures. After receiving his yoga teacher certification during the pandemic, he has grown to cherish the experience of movement and mindfulness. And when it comes to food, Michael appreciates a tasty food spot or attempting new recipes. “Food is a way of experiencing culture,” he said. “It’s a way of connecting with others while expanding your own perceptions of interests and your understanding of the world around you because of the way that you can create such an experience based off of simple ingredients sometimes into something that’s truly memorable, satisfying and comforting.” From the local street tacos from his hometown to discovering culinary gems when meeting with alumni across the country, Michael appreciates the joy of shared experiences through food.
As Michael takes on his new chapter as Director of Marketing Engagement, his energy, genuine empathy, and commitment to growth will continue to inspire and uplift those around him. The IUAA Communities team is sure to strengthen the IUAA community while continuing to create connections and meaningful experiences for alumni.
