Starting his undergrad in Virginia before transferring to Indiana University-Bloomington, Christopher Hillak’s time at IU was transformative, shaping his worldview and expanding his personal and professional growth. He was offered a part-time internship at an advertising agency in South Bend while still attending IU Bloomington as a sophomore. After completing that opportunity, he was offered a full-time job which required a high level of responsibility.
Christopher’s dedication to his career led to a 17-year pause from his academics, but his passion for learning never subsided. He returned to IU South Bend to receive his Bachelor of General Studies (BGS), which he received in 2017. He continued his studies at IU South Bend to achieve his Master of Public Affairs in 2021. As a non-traditional student with a full-time day job, he primarily took night classes. He navigated the challenges of finding a balance between his career and education by enrolling in a manageable number of evening classes each semester while maintaining his daytime job. Christopher felt extremely supported and welcomed by IU South Bend, the student population, and the faculty. He found a sense of belonging that continues to resonate with him today. Now an active board member with the IU South Bend Alumni Association and the IU LGBTQ+ Alumni Association, Christopher finds fulfillment in giving back to the IU community.
In his interview with IUAA Student Fellow Marley Anderson, Christopher Hillak shares his journey attending Indiana University, the transitions he went through balancing his career and academics, and the progression that led to his role as a Registration Management Specialist-University of Notre Dame.
