Winter magazine due Dec. 1

Success stories among IU alumni abound. We never have to look very far for a great story about an alum that we can feature in the magazine. The Winter issue is scheduled to be in the mail by Thanksgiving and should arrive in your mailbox around the first of December.

With the beginning of the public phase of IU’s $2.5 billion campaign, the Indiana University Alumni Magazine cover story focuses on four success stories that may not have been possible had it not been for the generosity of donors in past campaigns.

For example, Akeya Peterson-Porter, BS’06, tells of her life-changing student teaching experience in Kenya, funded by a Jepsen International Study Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 2000 by IU School of Education alumnus Keith J. Jepsen, EdD’74, and his wife, Kathleen A. Dore. Peterson-Porter is now an academic adviser to international students at Chicago’s Loyola University.

The current campaign aims to provide the resources for IU to continue churning out success stories among its alumni, which is the true measure of the university’s own success.

Success stories don’t end with the campaign feature. On subsequent pages, you will find the heart-warming story of Chelsea Faver, who came from the foster care system to earn an IU degree. She is now an officer in the Marine Corps and a student at the IU McKinney School of Law in Indianapolis.

Finally, we take a look at the strides made by women in the 40-plus years after passage of Title IX. Former Indiana Sen. Birch Bayh, JD’60, LLD’95, sponsored the legislation that has opened up opportunities for women in many fields.

And we learned of our own latest success story shortly before finishing the Winter issue of the IUAM. CASE V, our regional professional organization, awarded the magazine a bronze medal in the Best Alumni Magazine category for schools with circulation over 10,000.
