A Look at the Summer Issue of the Indiana University Alumni Magazine

I can’t play a musical instrument, but I appreciate good music. So, I was intrigued when I received a phone call from Ann Harrison, of Attica, Ind., who wanted to tell me about a wonderful program in the grade school there, featuring Indiana University music students teaching the youngsters how to play the violin.

It turns out that this program began in Bloomington, at Fairview Elementary School, and starts with first- and second-graders. The students at both schools appear to be totally absorbed in the lessons, and the communities enjoy the recitals that show off the talent.

Jacobs School of Music officials tout the program as not only teaching musical skills, but also promoting learning in other areas. The IU instructors benefit by learning to navigate the various classroom dynamics.

Thanks to Mrs. Harrison, the Jacobs Violin Project is the cover story for the Summer issue of the magazine, which our members should have recently received. The nicely written story by IU alumna Kathy Jonas and the beautiful photos by regular contributor Ann Schertz bring this program to life.

I hope you enjoy this feature as much as I did. In addition, the summer magazine answers the question, “What Makes IU Perfect to You?” and takes a look at the beginning of the state 200 years ago, followed soon after by a seminary in the wilderness that became Indiana University.
